Ghana's Minister of Youth and Sports provides details on funding and preparation for 13th African Games

During a press briefing in on Monday, March 4, 2024, Mr Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of , unveiled crucial details regarding the funding and preparations for the upcoming 13th to be hosted by Ghana.

has approved a substantial amount of $195,255,153 dedicated to the construction of sporting facilities essential for the successful hosting of the event, as disclosed by the Minister.

Mr. Ussif provided insight into the allocation of funds, highlighting that contractors for key facilities such as the Borteyman Sports Complex, Sports Stadium, and the Games Village have received their full payments. Specifically, Contracta Construction UK Ltd, Consar Ltd, and Mawums Ltd were paid $145,086,057, $34,102,135, and $16.066,961 respectively.

Regarding the $47 million operational expenses for the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the Minister clarified that these expenses covered a wide range of areas crucial for the successful organization of the games. These include technical meetings, accommodation, transportation, security, catering, accreditation, medical services, and more.

Mr. Ussif emphasized that the LOC had not purchased new vehicles but had opted to hire them for operational purposes. He stressed the importance of maintaining the facilities post-games, especially the Borteyman Facility, which is slated to be converted into the University of Sports Development.

Expressing gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa for his continuous support, Mr Ussif highlighted the President's vision in providing these facilities for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.

The Minister also revealed that preliminary events for the 13th African Games had commenced, with table tennis leading the way. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday, March 8, 2024.

With these comprehensive preparations and funding allocations, Ghana is poised to host a successful and memorable 13th African Games.
