George Addo Jnr, a sports broadcast journalist, has recently joined the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) after spending over a decade working in the Ghanaian and African media industry.
With his wealth of experience from working with Ghana's biggest media conglomerate, the Multimedia Group Limited, George aims to help further enhance the BBC's reputation as the leading sports news platform in Africa and the world.
George, who holds a bachelor's degree in Linguistics and Psychology from the University of Ghana, and a post-graduate certificate in Sports Marketing and Communication from the Global School of Business – UK, has had a passion for sports since his university days.
While at the University of Ghana, he played an active role in the Sports for Development Programme and provided extensive research for the Ghana Universities Sports Association.
He rose to the position of Head of Sports at the university's campus station, Radio Univers, where he led the strategic coverage of two significant sporting events, namely the West African Universities Games and the World University Games.
After joining Joy FM, George became the radio station's chief football commentator for nine years and was responsible for delivering world-class commentary on several major sporting tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), European football championships, UEFA Champions League campaigns, FIFA World Cup tournaments, and Ghana Premier League campaigns.
He was also a three-time nominee for the PAV Ansah Communications Award under the prestigious EMY Africa Awards scheme, and he was accredited to cover three consecutive UEFA Champions League finals in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
George's excellent storytelling abilities enabled him to create top-quality documentaries and features on the Ghanaian league, which led to him receiving an award from the Ghana Premier League Board for his significant promotion of the topflight in 2013 and 2014.
He has also had the opportunity to interview top personalities like CAF President Patrice Motsepe, Borussia Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer, Liverpool legends Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, and John Barnes, World Athletics boss Lord Coe, and legendary football commentators Peter Drury and Jim Beglin.
In his new role with the BBC, George has already appeared as a football reporter on the station's Sports World radio show, which airs on weekends.
While he is primarily based at BBC Quay House in Salford, he still does a few programs for the Multimedia Group in Ghana on radio and TV, as the corporation remains a partner station for the Multimedia Group.
