Dr Mary Ashun, Principal of Ghana International School (GIS), has been named one of the top 10 finalists for the prestigious 2023 Africa Education Medal.
The Africa Education Medal, a collaboration between T4 Education, Hewlett Packard (HP), and Microsoft, is considered the most esteemed educational award in Africa, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to transforming education on the continent.
This accolade is given to outstanding individuals who have demonstrated impact, leadership, and advocacy in the field of education.
Dr Ashun's nomination stems from her remarkable support for students from under-equipped schools, her efforts in teacher training and resource capacity building in remote villages, and her commitment to facilitating collaborative international educator visits.
In addition, she has played a pivotal role in fostering students' innovation in the Arts and Sciences while advocating for the educational rights of all children, particularly those marginalized.
Dr Ashun has been at the forefront of championing teacher development and capacity building through her teacher conference platform.
As the Chair of the Mastercard Foundation Young Africa Works Advisory Board, she has actively participated as a panellist on EdTech Mondays, a program that showcases technological innovation in schools.
Prior to joining GIS, Dr Ashun served as a school principal in Canada and gained experience teaching Sciences and Mathematics, as well as lecturing at Redeemer University in Ontario's Faculty of Education, where she taught and supervised both pre-service and in-service teachers.
