Ghana Gas signed deal to build a gas plant under Akufo-Addo government – Dr Bawumia Aide reveals

Ghana Gas had signed a deal for the Train Two Gas Processing Plant

Aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Krobea Kwabena Asante, has weighed in on the government’s recent announcement of a second gas processing plant, claiming that a similar initiative had already been set in motion under the previous administration.

In a statement, Mr Asante revealed that Ghana Gas had signed a deal for the “Train Two” Gas Processing Plant, which had gone through all the necessary processes but stalled following a change in government. According to him, the project would have had a capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), expandable to 300 MMscfd, to process additional raw gas volumes from the Jubilee and TEN fields.

He emphasized that the project would have generated 1,500 direct and indirect jobs for residents in the company’s operational areas.

Commenting on the Energy Minister’s announcement of a new gas plant, Mr Asante expressed hope that it would be a transparent deal that delivers value for money and incorporates expert opinions.

The government’s decision to construct a second gas processing plant was announced by Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor at a post-Cabinet briefing on Friday, March 7. He stated that the move is part of broader efforts to address Ghana‘s energy shortfalls and enhance gas supply.

However, Mr. Jinapor dismissed calls for a load-shedding timetable despite public concern over intermittent power outages. He insisted that no official load-shedding exercise is taking place, arguing that Ghana is currently exporting about 300 megawatts of electricity to neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso and Benin.
