We can afford to reduce it – University of Ghana agrees to cut residential fees by 25%

The University of Ghana has agreed to reduce residential facility fees by 25% following a directive from the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

The decision was reached during a meeting on February 6, 2025, between the Minister, the University’s management, and the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Ministry in Accra.

“I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent, and I have subsequently asked her to engage you (SRC) in the future on any fee announcement,” the Minister stated.

In response, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo assured the Minister that the University would comply with the directive.

“We have listened to you, our Minister, and also our students, and we can afford to reduce it to 25 percent across the board. Going forward, there will be adequate student engagement,” she said.

SRC Demands Refunds

SRC President Maradona Adjei Yeboah welcomed the reduction but insisted that students who had already paid the initial fees should receive refunds.

“We are thankful for the reduction; at least it will reduce some burden on our parents. There should be a refund for those who have already paid,” he said.

University management disclosed that approximately 80% of students have already paid their residential facility fees, raising questions about how the reduction will be implemented for affected students.
