University for Development Studies makes history as first African winners of FISU University World Cup

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has etched its name into history as the first African university to win the International University Sports Federation (FISU) University World Cup after defeating Brazil’s Paulista University 2-1 in a dramatic final at the Suoyuwan Stadium in Dalian, China.

The Tamale-based side produced a stunning comeback to upset the defending champions, who had lifted the 2023 edition of the tournament.

It was a tense contest for coach Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko’s men, who trailed at halftime after a spectacular strike from Paulista University. Despite dominating possession and creating chances, UDS were repeatedly denied by the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Their persistence, however, paid off in the dying moments of the second half when captain Mohammed Sulemana pounced on a defensive error to slot home the equaliser. With the game stretching into extra time, UDS looked the stronger side and sealed victory almost at the death when Alhassan’s well-placed corner sailed straight in to spark wild celebrations.

At the final whistle, Sulemana proudly lifted the trophy before a jubilant UDS squad, marking a defining moment not only for the university but also for African university football.

The road to glory was anything but easy. UDS overcame the University of Sharjah (UAE), Ramon Llull University (Spain), Kyungil University, and the University of Granada before dispatching the reigning champions in the final.

The triumph crowns an exceptional campaign and signals Africa‘s growing presence on the global university football stage
