Daily Graphic's Teacher trainee allowance to go headline misleading – Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education has refuted claims that the government is scrapping teacher trainee allowances, describing a recent report by The Daily Graphic as misleading.

In a statement issued in response to the newspaper’s front-page headline on February 4, 2025, the Ministry clarified that the publication did not accurately reflect the remarks made by the Education Minister during a meeting with the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF).

According to the Ministry, the Minister emphasized that the government remains committed to supporting teacher trainees and would maintain the allowances until further discussions and an agreement are reached with stakeholders. Additionally, he noted that the government is open to exploring an enhanced loan scheme for trainees if necessary.

“The Hon. Minister was emphatic that Government would maintain the allowances until further deliberations and a firm agreement is reached with all stakeholders,” the statement read.

The Ministry urged The Daily Graphic to correct the misleading impression and give equal prominence to its rejoinder. It also called on media houses to verify information before publication to avoid causing unnecessary concern among stakeholders.

Reaffirming its commitment to policies that support teacher trainees, the Ministry encouraged the public to disregard the erroneous publication and rely on official communication for accurate information.
