Three confirmed dead, four trapped as galamsey pit collapses at Twifo Mampong

A tragic galamsey accident at Twifo Mampong in the Central Region has claimed the lives of three persons, with four others still trapped underground after a pit they were digging for gold caved in on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

According to reports, seven men were involved in the illegal mining operation. Four were working underground while three operated a pumping machine at the surface. The collapse was discovered after one survivor managed to escape and raise the alarm.

Mr Isaac Yawson, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, said preliminary investigations revealed that the pit belonged to a known illegal miner, but the young men had allegedly entered the site at night without the owner’s consent.

The DCE has since ordered the immediate arrest of the pit owner while rescue efforts continue to recover those still trapped.
