Upper West health officials alarmed as meningitis deaths hit 60

Health officials in the Upper West Region have raised concerns over the increasing fatalities from cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) as cases rise from 42 to 60, with 14 confirmed deaths.

Regional Health Director, Dr. Damien Punguyire, attributes the high death toll to misdiagnoses, delays in seeking treatment, and financial constraints preventing timely medical intervention. Many cases are initially mistaken for malaria, leading to improper treatment until the infection worsens.

Dr. Punguyire stressed the need for early medical attention, urging individuals who experience fever, neck pain, or worsening symptoms after a malaria diagnosis to seek immediate healthcare.

“For the numbers increasing, we are not too worried about the numbers, but what we are worried about is the number of deaths,” he said. “With proper intervention, nobody should die.”

In response to the outbreak, health authorities are intensifying awareness campaigns and considering free treatment options to encourage early hospital visits and reduce fatalities.
