Ghana records outbreaks of COVID-19, Influenza A H3N2 and Monkeypox

Ghana is currently managing outbreaks of COVID-19, Influenza A H3N2 and Monkeypox disease, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced.

The Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said although measures have been put in place to control the spread of the diseases, the public must remain vigilant to prevent the health system from being overwhelmed.

He disclosed that Ghana had recorded 452 active COVID-19 cases as of June 7, with the Omicron variant being the dominant strain. Most of the cases were recorded in the Greater Accra Region, while no severe or critical cases and no COVID-19-related deaths had been reported since March 2022.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye attributed the increase in COVID-19 cases to seasonal factors, reduced mask usage and low vaccination rates, urging the public to continue observing safety measures and get vaccinated.

The GHS also reported 773 cases of Influenza A H3N2, with infections recorded in most regions except the Upper East, Upper West and North East Regions.

Meanwhile, Ghana has confirmed five cases of Monkeypox in the Eastern, Western and Greater Accra Regions. The GHS said no deaths or critical cases have been recorded, but the country currently has no Monkeypox vaccine or specific treatment available.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye said surveillance measures have been strengthened to monitor the three diseases and advised the public to remain cautious to prevent further spread.
