Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority wins 2025 IAPH Sustainability Award for outstanding community-building initiatives

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has been named the overall winner in the Community Building category of the 2025 International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) Sustainability Awards.

GPHA earned the accolade for its exemplary contributions to sustainable port-community development, selected by a panel of 15 expert jurors from over 100 entries worldwide, with 18 finalists shortlisted. The award recognises the Authority’s community-building project, which has delivered lasting social impact, inclusivity, and shared value between the ports and surrounding communities.

The IAPH Sustainability Awards highlight top-quality sustainability initiatives under the World Ports Sustainability Programme (WPSP), a global platform promoting ports as proactive agents of sustainable change in the maritime industry. GPHA was commended for its comprehensive approach, integrating environmental stewardship, social investment, and collaborative development in its engagement with communities.

Mr Johnson Aseidu Nketiah, Board Chairman of GPHA, led the team to receive the award, while Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, Director-General of GPHA, expressed gratitude to IAPH and dedicated the recognition to the hardworking staff and partner communities. He noted that the award reflects GPHA’s resilience and shared purpose with its communities, motivating the Authority to continue delivering professional and impactful services to its clients and stakeholders.

Mr Jens Meier, President of IAPH and CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority, praised the global port community for advancing sustainable development, noting that since its 2018 inception, WPSP has showcased over 516 innovative sustainability projects from 195 ports across 71 countries.
