President Mahama to grace 60th anniversary launch of the Ghanaian Cedi on October 28 in Accra

President John Dramani Mahama will serve as the guest of honour at the 60th anniversary launch of the Ghanaian Cedi on October 28, 2025, in Accra. The milestone celebration presents an opportunity to reflect on six decades of monetary sovereignty, engage the public on the history and future of the currency, and promote pride in Ghana’s financial and cultural identity.

The event, themed “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience,” will commemorate Ghana’s official adoption of the Cedi on July 19, 1965, marking a significant step toward economic independence and the country’s transition from colonial rule. Since its inception, the Cedi has undergone reforms, redesigns, and policy evolutions, functioning both as a monetary instrument and a national emblem of resilience and progress.

The celebration will also focus on policy literacy, financial education, and the Bank of Ghana‘s Clean Note Campaign, inspiring the next generation to understand and safeguard the integrity of the national currency. It will highlight the evolution of the Cedi, its role in national development, and provide practical education on currency usage, security features, and monetary policy relevance.

Stakeholders and citizens across all regions will be engaged through inclusive and participatory activities, designed to inspire national pride, confidence in the Cedi, and ownership of Ghana’s financial narrative. Flagship activities include a Cedi Van Regional Roadshow, exhibitions, educational outreach, public campaigns on clean note handling, and demonstrations of currency security features.

The anniversary will also feature a Currency Conference with central banks, academia, and the private sector, alongside youth competitions in music, art, essays, and quizzes, aimed at driving awareness and appreciation of the Cedi among students.

The Cedi@60 celebration underscores Ghana’s commitment to monetary stability and economic resilience, marking six decades of a currency that has symbolised both independence and national identity.
