The Pru East MP deemed the gesture irresponsible, considering ECG's substantial indebtedness to Independent Power Producers.
The donation, which took place on Monday, December 11, 2023, was part of ECG's purported efforts to enhance police operations nationwide.
Dr. Kwabena Donkor expressed his disappointment with the donation, stating that ECG has no business assuming the state's responsibility to provide logistics for the Ghana Police, especially given its financial challenges.
In a statement to journalists, Dr Donkor highlighted the significant debt burden faced by ECG, citing the recent intervention by the Minister of Finance to prevent the shutdown of Sonon Asorgli due to ECG's outstanding debts to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
“For an entity that cannot pay its indebtedness, they have no business buying motors for the Ghana Police. It is the height of irresponsibility on the Management of ECG to donate motorbikes to the Ghana Police when they cannot pay their debt. I call on the Ministers of Energy and State Enterprises to call the ECG management to book,” Dr. Kwabena Donkor asserted.
The former minister urged further investigation into the matter, calling on the Ministers of Energy and State Enterprises to scrutinize ECG's actions and take appropriate action.
