Cape Coast, Sept. 17 (GNA) – Five people have died and 12 others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash at Wakrom, near Yamoransa, on the Cape Coast–Accra Highway on Monday afternoon.
The accident occurred when a DAF truck, with registration number AW 9548-13 and loaded with 700 bags of rice, collided with an Accra-bound Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle, registered GC 9728-21.
Bystanders managed to rescue 12 victims before the arrival of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). They were rushed to the Biriwa Polyclinic, where one was later confirmed dead.
DOII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the rescue team got to the scene at 14:59 hours and extricated five more victims from the mangled vehicle. Four of them were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, while one critically injured person remains under treatment.
The driver and mate of the DAF truck escaped unhurt. The accident caused heavy traffic on the busy highway as emergency services worked to save lives and clear the wreckage.
