ECOWAS standby force applauded by Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga for action in Niger political crisis

Mahama Ayariga, Member of for Central and also a member of the Economic Community of West African States () Parliament, has expressed support for the regional organization's decision to deploy its standby force to restore constitutional order in .

Ayariga highlighted the significance of both diplomatic efforts and military capacity in resolving the crisis in Niger, where a military junta took control through a coup on July 27.

He emphasized that while diplomacy remains a crucial avenue for resolution, showcasing ECOWAS‘ military capability is vital to ensure the effectiveness of diplomatic negotiations.

He stated, “We all believe that ultimately the issue should be resolved diplomatically but for diplomacy to work effectively, the military option has to remain on the table and those that ECOWAS will be engaging in Niger must understand that ECOWAS has the capacity to enforce its will.”

Ayariga underscored the importance of demonstrating ECOWAS‘ capacity to enforce its decisions, particularly in cases where dialogue with the military junta proves challenging.

He expressed confidence that ECOWAS' ability to back its diplomatic efforts with military readiness would facilitate a conducive environment for meaningful negotiations.

The Bawku Central legislator also urged the sub-region to collectively determine the values it seeks to prioritize in its development journey.

He emphasized the significance of upholding values such as the rule of law and democracy, noting that the sub-region should be prepared to pay any necessary price to safeguard these values.
