ECG mobilises GHC 12.5 million from debtors in Volta Region in a week

The Volta Regional Directorate of the (ECG) has successfully mobilised GHC 12.5 million from its debtors in just one week, which exceeded the initial target of GHC 5 million.

The collection represented a 250 per cent revenue mobilisation, according to Mr Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Regional Public Relations Officer. He disclosed that the operation was being finalised while the second week of the exercise is ongoing.

The ECG is on a revenue mobilisation campaign to collect a debt of 5.7 billion Cedis nationwide, with customers in the Volta and regions owing about GHC 219 million.

The revenue mobilisation exercise is being conducted in 11 operational districts across the two regions and was yielding the desired results, Mr Antwi stated, with two more weeks to go. In a related development, the Regional Directorate has given the (GWCL) a notice to pay its GHC 17 million debt accumulated from 2021 to date.

The entire Kpeve headworks has the highest amount of about GHC 13 million in power arrears, with the least being GHC 68.48. The demand notice signed by Mr Michael Buabin, the Acting General Manager of ECG, , is asking the GWCL to settle its bills on or before April 4, 2023, or risk disconnection across its offices and generating facilities in the region.

According to the letter, the GWCL had six working days to settle the arrears, or else its facility would be disconnected on Monday, April 3.

Mr Buabin reiterated that ECG never took pleasure in disconnecting its clients, but as a business entity that bought power to trade for profit, it could collapse if unpaid bills piled up uncollected. He explained that disconnection was the last resort to prevent the customer from accruing more debt and to enable the Company to gather more revenue to keep the electricity supply chain running.

He further stated that the ECG aimed to make the Volta Region a hub of excellent customer service, and the revenue collected from customers would help the Company complete pending projects and initiate new ones.
