Rescue operations are currently underway to retrieve the bodies of 17 individuals who were trapped when a mining pit collapsed on them at the Korle Teye Takorso site in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.
According to reports, out of the 9 individuals who were rescued from the debris immediately after the collapse, 7 have been confirmed dead, while 2 have survived.
The cause of the pit collapse remains unclear, although some community members speculate that heavy rainfall experienced in various parts of the country on Monday may have contributed to the incident.
Citi News has learned that the rescue operation is being led by local residents and other miners in the area, who have prevented journalists from accessing the scene to cover the unfortunate event.
The bodies that have been recovered thus far have been transported to the morgue after local miners called for the assistance of an ambulance.
