As part of efforts to mitigate fatalities on highways, especially at night, the Ashanti Regional Office of the (NRSA) has conducted an engagement session with long-distance drivers, stressing the importance of adhering to road safety regulations.

The initiative, targeting drivers and managers of the State Transport Company (STC), Metro Mass Transit (MMT), and other transport unions, is part of the NRSA's ongoing activities aimed at reducing road crashes on major highways. Officials from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority () and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the were also present to educate drivers on their responsibilities.

According to NRSA data, roads in the are among the deadliest in the country, accounting for 22.9% of fatalities, followed by the Greater region with 16.2%. In response, the Regional Office has intensified engagements with stakeholders to address the reckless driving behaviour contributing to these statistics.

Participants received safety tips and were presented with statistics of fatalities to emphasize the role they can play in reducing road crashes. Mr. Kwasi Agyenim Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Head of NRSA, highlighted that most fatal accidents on highways occur at night and dawn, hence the focus on long-distance drivers who often operate during these periods.

To address this, safety officers have been deployed to lorry terminals to conduct pre-trip inspections, ensuring drivers and vehicles are in optimal condition before embarking on journeys. Additionally, efforts are underway to promptly remove broken-down vehicles from roads, a common cause of accidents at night.

The NRSA is targeting road user risk groups, including passengers, pedestrians, and motorcyclists, as part of a comprehensive strategy to tackle the menace. Mr. Amos Abakah, Regional Manager of , emphasized the importance of checking vehicle health and driver licenses, with a focus on enforcing retro-reflective tapes on vehicles to enhance visibility at night, even when stationary.
