The Ghana Police Service has secured the conviction of 43-year-old Camila Alhassan, who was sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour by the Accra Circuit Court for offensive conduct over abusive social media posts targeting President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.
According to a police statement issued on July 17, 2026, Alhassan was arrested on July 9 through an intelligence-led operation after officers intercepted a TikTok video in which she allegedly made offensive, insulting and derogatory remarks against the President and the First Lady.

The video also reportedly contained threats against their lives and false allegations about the President’s private life.
Police said the statements were considered capable of disturbing public peace and undermining national cohesion.
Following investigations, Alhassan was charged with offensive conduct and false communication before the Accra Circuit Court. Sentencing was initially delayed after she claimed to be pregnant, but a medical examination at the Police Hospital confirmed she was not pregnant.
The court subsequently sentenced her on July 16, 2026, to one year’s imprisonment with hard labour.
The Police Service said it is also taking steps to arraign Alhassan before the High Court on a separate charge of false communication under the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).
The Police reminded the public that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, that right must be exercised responsibly and within the law.
It cautioned that social media should not be used to spread falsehoods, issue threats or publish unlawful content, warning that offenders will face legal consequences.
