The Ghana Police Service has announced that a 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for his role in a robbery at a mining site at Manso Akwasiso in the Ashanti South Region.
The convict, Dominic Ofori, popularly known as Fanta, was arrested on February 16, 2026, after years on the run. He pleaded guilty before the Bekwai Circuit Court to robbery, contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). The court subsequently sentenced him to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

According to police, the incident occurred on March 20, 2022, following intelligence that a group of armed men from Manso Abodom were planning to attack a mining site at Manso Akwasiso to rob the owner of gold concentrate.
Acting on the information, officers from the Manso Adubia District mounted a coordinated operation and laid an ambush at the site.
At about 5:30 p.m. that day, four armed men reportedly stormed the site, fired indiscriminately and made away with gold concentrate belonging to the miners. Police personnel on surveillance intervened, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Three of the suspects ,Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif and Gideon Takyi ,sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and were pronounced dead on arrival at St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum.
Dominic Ofori managed to escape at the time but was later apprehended and prosecuted.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice, urging the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts with timely and credible information.
