GACL reverses interdiction of airport security officer

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has reversed its decision to interdict a security officer who conducted a pre-boarding search on National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah at the Kumasi Airport.

In a statement, GACL said the reversal followed further consultations and new facts that emerged after the initial decision. However, it indicated that the Committee of Enquiry established to investigate the incident would continue with its work.

The security officer, Awudu Basit, was initially interdicted after GACL said the search at the VVIP Lounge embarrassed the minister and created a negative impression about the company’s image.

The interdiction attracted mixed reactions from the public. While some Ghanaians argued that no public official is above security procedures and should be subject to routine searches, others criticised the officer’s actions but questioned the decision to interdict him.

GACL said the ongoing inquiry will determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and guide any further action.
