Two men who allegedly posed as officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to extort money from customers have been arrested following a tip-off from vigilant residents.
The suspects, identified as Richard Nii Moi and Edward Quartey, reportedly impersonated ECG Revenue Collection and Disconnection Officers and targeted customers who were unable to produce proof of recent electricity bill payments.

According to the Achimota District Manager of ECG, Mary Kpordzih, the suspects demanded money from customers under the guise of carrying out official revenue collection and disconnection exercises.
She said residents became suspicious of the pair’s activities and requested to see their official identification cards, which they failed to produce.
The residents subsequently alerted the ECG Achimota District Office, leading to an operation that resulted in the arrest of the suspects.
Mrs Kpordzih said the two men are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
She commended residents for their vigilance and urged customers to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be an ECG official before making any payments or allowing access to their premises.
“When in doubt, always report such suspicious persons to the nearest ECG office or the nearest police station,” she advised.
The arrests come as ECG continues to intensify its nationwide revenue mobilisation efforts, including the deployment of a National Revenue Taskforce to clamp down on illegal electricity connections and revenue losses.
