Police patrol teams reportedly spotted two suspects ,Johnson Mawutor, 26, and Kelvin Ofori, 22 ,riding an unregistered motorbike towards Ayomso near Goaso.
Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects allegedly switched off the motorbike’s headlights and attempted to flee by making a U-turn. Officers pursued and arrested them.
A search conducted on the suspects revealed an AK-47 assault rifle (serial number 68098152) loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition concealed in a bag they were carrying.
The suspects later led police to their residences at Abro Danho, a suburb of Goaso. A further search in Mawutor’s room uncovered additional items, including a Beretta Bruni pistol (Model 92), an NM157-1941 pistol, 30 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and 50 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
Other items retrieved were four Motorola handsets, a Contiso F35 drone, a machete, and a bayonet knife.
Preliminary investigations indicate that earlier that day, at about 3:00 p.m., Mawutor allegedly instructed his cousin, Mawuli Dogba, 20, to accompany one Mohammed-Adinan Ussif ,who is currently at large ,to Techiman in the Bono East Region to collect a parcel on his behalf.
Police say Ussif entered a house in Techiman, returned with a parcel in a wine-colored polyester bag, and arranged for Dogba to transport it to Goaso via a Toyota Voxy minibus.
Upon Dogba’s arrival at the Goaso lorry station, Mawutor and Ofori reportedly met him and took possession of the parcel. Later that night, at about 11:30 p.m., police intercepted the suspects with the bag containing the AK-47 rifle and ammunition while they were allegedly heading towards Ayomso.
Investigations are ongoing to apprehend Mohammed-Adinan Ussif and any other individuals who may have been involved.
The three suspects ,Mawutor, Dogba, and Ofori, are expected to be put before court and remanded to assist with further investigations. The retrieved items have been retained as exhibits.
