According to reports, eight persons have been killed with several people injured when supporters attempted to forcefully enter the Olembe Stadium to watch the match between Cameroon and Comoros.
A statement by CAF wrote, “CAF is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired.
We are in constant communication with the Cameroon government and the Local Organizing Committee.”
However, the CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, asked the General Secretary, Veron Mongo-Omba to visit the supporters in hospital in Yaoundé, the statement further said.
An earlier report by the AFP said, Eight deaths were recorded, two women in their 30s, four men in their 30s, one child, one body taken away by the family.”
But, Communications Minister Rene Emmanuel Sadi disclosed that 38 people were injured in the crash, including seven seriously.
Due to COVID-19, attendance of tournaments has been reduced to 60 per cent stadium capacity, but the capacity increases to 80 per cent during matches involving the national team.
Yesterday's game ended with a 2-1 win against Comoros, enabling Cameroon to reach the quarter-finals in the ongoing AFCON2021 tournament.
