Government launches investigation into cybersecurity breach affecting over 5,700 MTN Ghana customers

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation has announced the launch of a formal investigation into a reported cybersecurity breach affecting approximately 5,700 customers of MTN Ghana.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry confirmed it is working in close collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the National Communications Authority (NCA), and the Data Protection Commission (DPC) to determine the extent of the breach and its implications.

The Ministry assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to protect affected individuals and to ensure compliance with Ghana’s Data Protection Laws. Affected customers will be contacted as part of the remedial process.

“The Ministry is working to establish whether there have been any breaches on the part of the Mobile Network Operator,” the statement read.

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, also posted on X (formerly Twitter), affirming the Ministry’s commitment to a thorough investigation and transparency throughout the process. He urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue.

The Ministry pledged to keep the public informed of all developments as they unfold.
