Joseph Osei Owusu, the Member of Parliament for Bekwai, has denied any involvement or affiliation with individuals captured on a leaked tape discussing plans to oust Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament stated that he neither knows the people involved nor has he engaged in any such conversation. In the leaked tape, one person claimed that Joe Wise offered to give up the Bekwai seat for him once he leaves parliament.
In response, Osei Owusu emphasized that his decision to leave parliament in 2024 was public knowledge and expressed confusion as to why it would be brought up in a private conversation he knows nothing about.
He stated, “I don't know the voice or the face of the person who mentioned my name in the audio. He said that I don't want to run for MP again, but that is old news. I announced in 2021 that I was not going to parliament again. It is not surprising that he mentioned my name because everybody interested in politics heard this announcement. However, it is a lie if he says I've had conversations with him or any other police officer.”
Regarding the leaked audio's potential impact on President Nana Akufo-Addo‘s decision-making, Osei Owusu expressed the belief that the discussion would not influence the President's decisions.
He acknowledged that every leader may have subordinates or members who disagree on certain matters, and he viewed the audio's content in that light.
