Ashaiman, Accra – Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully extinguished a potentially devastating fire at the Ashaiman main market during the early hours of Sunday, according to GNFS Tema Regional Command's Public Relations Officer, Divisional Officer III Ebenezer Yenzu.
Yenzu credited the timely response of the fire service for preventing a more severe situation. Upon receiving a distress call, the Ashaiman Division of the GNFS swiftly arrived at the scene within five minutes.
However, Yenzu highlighted challenges the fire service faced due to traders encroaching on access ways within the market, obstructing the fire tenders' movement.
He announced plans for the fire service to collaborate with the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly to establish more accessible routes within the main Ashaiman area to enhance safety in case of emergencies.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire that affected 42 shops within the Ashaiman market premises.
Albert Boakye Okyere, Municipal Chief Executive of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, expressed appreciation for the fire service's rapid response.
He emphasized the market's significance as a major business hub for residents and pledged that authorities would ensure strict adherence to regulations to prevent future incidents.
