George Akoto, a 52-year-old operator of a drinking spot, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court on charges of unlawful possession of narcotic drugs. Akoto pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to the prosecution, which involved policemen stationed at the Police Intelligence Directorate, Akoto runs a drinking spot in the “June 4th” suburb of Accra. On January 19, 2024, the Police Intelligence Directorate, in collaboration with the Formed Police Unit, conducted an intelligence-led operation at Kantamanto Market and its environs to address criminal activities.
During the operation, Akoto was among the 62 suspects arrested. A search at his drinking spot revealed a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs. When questioned about the source of the supply, Akoto reportedly admitted ownership and claimed that a man at Timber Market supplied him with the alleged drugs. However, he failed to provide information on the whereabouts of this supplier.
The accused has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with three sureties, one of whom is required to be justified with landed property. The case has been adjourned to February 12, 2024. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to locate and arrest the alleged supplier mentioned by Akoto.
