According to Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assented to the three new taxes passed by Parliament in March 2023.
The bills that have been passed include the Excise Duty Amendment Bill 2022, the Growth and Sustainability Levy Bill 2022, the Ghana Revenue Authority Bill 2022 and the Income Tax Amendment Bill 2022.
“The bills have since been returned to the Clerk of Parliament for the final processes to be completed,” said Oppong Nkrumah in an interview with Citi News.
He added, “From there, there will be the necessary transmittals before the Ghana Revenue Authority can commence implementation.”
The new taxes aim to generate about 4 billion Ghana Cedis annually to help the government mobilize domestic revenue.
These bills are also essential in supporting the government's $3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) Programme staff-level agreement, which requires approval from the board.
The Minority in Parliament had previously expressed opposition to the bills, but they were passed despite an MP from the majority being involved in a near-fatal accident on his way to the House.
