Mr Richard Kwami Sefe, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Anlo, has initiated the construction of a three-unit classroom block with an office and a store at Bomigo E.P. Basic School.
The project, aimed at addressing the school's infrastructure needs, will receive 70% funding from Adanu, a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to improving education in rural Ghana. The remaining percentage will be covered by the MP, while the community will contribute labour.
During the sod-cutting ceremony, Mr Benjamin Worlanyo Awuku, the head teacher of Bomigo E.P. Basic School, expressed gratitude to the MP, Adanu, partners, and all those who supported the project.
He highlighted the challenges faced by the school, including insufficient classrooms to accommodate students and deteriorating buildings with leaky roofs during heavy rainfall.
Mr Seth Amusah, a volunteer teacher at the school, emphasized the need for support from the government, NGOs, and individuals, especially considering the remote location of the area, accessible only by crossing bodies of water.
He highlighted the necessity of attracting and retaining teachers in the community.
To address the challenges, Mr Amusah called for assistance in providing a headmaster's bungalow and staff accommodation.
He explained that female teachers, in particular, hesitate to accept postings to the school due to safety concerns related to daily boat crossings without adequate life jackets.
Jennifer Agbonu, a student in Basic 7 at the school, highlighted additional challenges affecting education in the community.
She mentioned the lack of electricity, the absence of a library and learning materials, and the high incidence of teenage pregnancies due to parental care and financial constraints. She appealed to other NGOs and the government to intervene and support the community.
In an interview, Mr Sefe acknowledged the genuine challenges faced by the community and pledged to do his utmost to support their educational needs.
He emphasized the importance of community members rallying together and demonstrating the right attitude to ensure the timely completion of the project for the benefit of all.
