The second edition of the Accra Inter-City Homowo Marathon has been officially launched, with a new date set for Friday, August 4, 2023.
The marathon, featuring race categories of 21 kilometers, 10 kilometers, and 5 kilometers, will take place on Founders' Day.
Mrs Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, the Mayor of Accra, expressed her excitement about partnering with Medivents Consult and the Ga Traditional Council for the marathon.
She announced that the event had been adopted by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) as part of the assembly's 125th-anniversary celebrations.
The Mayor emphasized the significance of athletics in national development and highlighted the assembly's commitment to making sports more attractive, which motivated their partnership with the marathon. She praised the organizers for involving talented youth in long-distance running and providing them with a platform to launch their careers.
Mr William Dodzi Ezah, the Race Director of the Accra Inter-City Homowo Marathon, shared details about the upcoming event. Prior to the race, there will be a two-day sports expo, allowing sponsors to showcase their products and engage with athletes.
He encouraged the public to participate in the marathon for their overall well-being, emphasizing that participants would receive gifts from sponsors in all race categories.
Nana Yaw Owusu Djomoh, the General Manager of Serene Insurance, announced that all participants in the race would receive a GH¢1000 insurance cover, totalling one million Ghana cedis in insurance packages.
Additionally, the winner of the marathon would be awarded a travel insurance policy for the Soweto Marathon in South Africa later in the year.
Mr Djomoh expressed delight in partnering with Medivents Consult and encouraged people to participate in the marathon for their health, physical fitness, and overall well-being.
The Accra Inter-City Homowo Marathon is sponsored by various organizations, including HD+, Aqua Blue Mineral Water, mybet.Africa.com, and G4S, among others.
The marathon aims to promote physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and the talent of young athletes in long-distance running.
