Ghana emerges as a significant force in West African mineral development

Ghana is emerging as a significant force in mineral development across , according to the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC).

At a conference in , AMDC Programmes Manager, Mkhululi Ncube, highlighted Ghana's recent progress in “green minerals” as a bright spot for the region. Green minerals, which include critical elements like lithium, cobalt, and zinc, offer opportunities for sustainable development and regional economic growth.

Mr Ncube emphasized Ghana's potential to lead mineral value chains in the Economic Community of West African States () region. He sees the country as a key player in solid minerals development, particularly in light of recent advancements in green minerals.

The AMDC hosted a seminar to discuss an assessment of mineral governance initiatives across five African pilot countries, including Ghana. The assessment aimed to evaluate alignment with the Africa Mining Vision (AMV), a framework for leveraging mineral resources for sustainable development.

While optimistic about Ghana's trajectory, Mr Ncube acknowledged significant challenges, including unreliable energy access, infrastructure gaps, and restrictive trade policies. These obstacles hinder the realization of Ghana's mineral potential and broader regional integration.

To address these challenges, Mr. Ncube endorsed policy solutions proposed in the draft African Green Minerals Strategy. This strategy emphasizes increased regional coordination and integration to unlock the full potential of mineral resources.

The AMDC's mineral governance assessments, like the one conducted in Ghana, play a crucial role in informing evidence-based policies and tracking alignment with the AMV. By identifying areas of progress and gaps, these assessments facilitate targeted interventions to improve governance and maximize the benefits of mineral resources.

Through enhanced governance, Ghana and its neighbours can leverage mineral wealth to stimulate economic development, create jobs, and boost export revenues. The AMV provides a strategic roadmap for harnessing mineral resources in a transparent, equitable, and sustainable manner, driving socioeconomic growth across the continent.

As Ghana continues to advance in mineral development, supported by initiatives like the AMDC's assessments, it reaffirms its position as a regional leader in sustainable mineral management and economic transformation.
