In the upcoming district assembly election in the Ho West District of the Volta Region, a total of 78 candidates are contesting, consisting of 66 men and 12 women. The election is scheduled for December 19, 2023, according to the Electoral Commission.
Additionally, 186 candidates have registered to participate in the district's unit committee election, with 159 men and 27 women among them.
The district's election landscape reflects a diverse field of candidates vying for various positions.
Mrs. Kafui Randolph, Ho West District Officer of the Electoral Commission, shared this information with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Ho.
However, there has been concern about the low participation of women in the electoral process.
Dr Harrison Kofi Belley, a Governance Expert, emphasized the importance of women's participation and representation in decision-making and governance processes.
He called for increased support to encourage more women to participate in political processes and assume leadership roles in the country.
