Speaking on the theme, the Vice President said leadership and academic excellence do not happen by chance but are cultivated deliberately through intellectual effort, resilience and character development. She noted that intellectual strain, uncertainty and doubt should be seen as part of the training process that builds credibility, discipline and moral strength.
She cautioned students against academic dishonesty, describing it as a serious warning sign of declining standards rather than a minor offence. According to her, habits formed in private life often influence behaviour in public leadership roles.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang reminded student leaders that leadership must prioritise the collective good, particularly the needs of the vulnerable. She urged them to recognise their privilege and use their education to uplift others, including persons with disabilities.
She encouraged the students to embrace entrepreneurship and take advantage of opportunities, noting that Ghana’s next phase of development will depend on initiative, creativity and the ability to translate ideas into solutions, research into impact and skills into value.
Addressing female students, the Vice President said their presence in leadership spaces is both earned and essential, and urged them to remain confident in their abilities and grounded in their values despite unequal expectations.
She concluded by stressing that the future is being shaped now, not after graduation, and that building the Ghana the nation aspires to requires responsibility, integrity and service from all.
