Nigerian influencer’s Ghanaian passport claim sparks outrage and debate over citizenship and social tensions

A Nigerian influencer, “Rich King Mario,” sparked widespread outrage in Ghana after claiming to have obtained a Ghanaian passport for promoting the country.

Many Ghanaians expressed disbelief, arguing that promotion alone does not qualify someone for citizenship and raising concerns over potential misuse of passports by foreigners for criminal activities.

The controversy intersects with fears of cybercrime, highlighted by the recent arrest of 32 Nigerians in Kasoa for organised scams.

Mario defended his claim by invoking pan-African unity, economic ties, and the presence of over 2 million Ghanaians living in Nigeria, arguing that criticisms of Nigerians in Ghana are hypocritical.

Discussions also emphasised the perceived prestige of Ghanaian passports compared to Nigerian ones, with Ghanaians viewing their passport as highly valuable for international opportunities, while Nigerian passports are seen as limited in utility.

Cultural comparisons further inflamed debate, portraying Ghanaians as composed and orderly, while Nigerians were described as more chaotic in social settings.

The incident has intensified conversations on national identity, citizenship integrity, and the broader integration and reciprocity between Ghanaian and Nigerian communities.
