IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno denies claims Ghana Police Service is withholding healthcare from officers

Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has dismissed social media claims suggesting that the Ghana Police Service denied a police officer access to healthcare.

The statements follow a widely circulated video in which an officer with a swollen leg alleged neglect after an accident at Asante Mampong.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Thursday, the IGP clarified that the officer initially received treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital before being transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra. Doctors at the Police Hospital had recommended a below-the-knee amputation to save the officer’s life. However, the officer and his family declined the procedure, choosing to pursue treatment elsewhere, a decision the medical team respected.

“The foot got worse, and he later decided to publish his condition in the media,” Mr Yohuno said, adding, “The Ghana Police Service has never denied any officer access to health.”

The IGP noted that the matter only came to his attention following the video’s circulation, and the Police Administration is actively working to locate the officer and engage him and his family on the next steps. He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to the welfare of all officers, including ensuring access to quality healthcare.
