Ghanaian government-sponsored PhD students in UK face urgent tuition funding shortfall of over GH₵5.7 million for 2025/2026 academic year

Prince Komla Bansah, President of Ghana’s government-sponsored PhD students in the United Kingdom, has revealed that more than GH₵5.7 million is urgently needed to settle outstanding tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, November 10, Mr Bansah disclosed that the 36 Ghanaian PhD candidates collectively owe around £400,000 in unpaid school fees.

“For the 2025/2026 academic year, which we are almost three months into now, our estimation is that it will require almost £400,000 to address the school fees alone for the PhDs. We have submitted all the data to the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat,” he stated, emphasising that timely intervention is critical.

Mr Bansah explained that the Secretariat has been unable to act on the submissions due to a lack of funds, leaving the responsibility with the government and the Finance Minister to resolve the matter.

He also highlighted the deteriorating living conditions faced by the scholars, including delays in tuition payments and monthly stipends, eviction threats, and reliance on food banks for survival.
