Hearts of Oak’s unbeaten run ends with 1-0 defeat to Asante Kotoko in thrilling Matchday 9 Ghana Premier League clash

Hearts of Oak suffered their first defeat of the 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League season following a narrow 1-0 loss to fierce rivals Asante Kotoko in a pulsating Matchday 9 encounter. The decisive moment came from Morifing Donzo, who calmly converted a penalty in the first half to secure all three points for the Porcupine Warriors.

From the opening whistle by referee Reginald Amoah Collins, the game was end-to-end, with both sides pressing for an early breakthrough. Hearts striker Frank Eduku Abora created several half-chances, only to be denied by Kotoko’s goalkeeper Mohammed Camara, who produced crucial saves to keep his side in the game.

The match-defining moment occurred just before halftime when Peter Amidu was brought down in the box, leading to the awarded penalty, which Donzo converted to put Kotoko ahead.

Hearts tried to respond in the second half but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. A defensive lapse by Kelvin Osei Asibey nearly allowed Kotoko to double the lead, while captain Samba Oneil came close with a header that drifted wide.

Controversy flared in the closing stages when Mohammed Hussein’s strike for Hearts was ruled offside, denying the Phobians a potential equaliser. Despite late pressure, Hearts’ attacks lacked the sharpness needed to break through, allowing Kotoko to maintain their slender advantage and hand Hearts of Oak their first loss of the season.
