Central Region set to become Ghana’s armwrestling hub,

The Central Region is poised to become Ghana’s hub for armwrestling, according to Mr Abass Sulley, Chairman of the newly constituted Central Regional Armwrestling Association.

Mr Sulley made the statement when the association’s new leadership paid a courtesy call on Ms Joyce Datsa, the Regional Sports Director, to discuss development plans and collaboration with the National Sports Authority (NSA).

He expressed optimism about the region’s potential to develop world-class athletes in armwrestling, citing its strategic location, rich sporting talent, and the association’s commitment to grassroots development.

“Our focus will be on Junior and Senior High Schools, where we plan to introduce armwrestling as a competitive sport. This will help identify and nurture young talents and give them the opportunity to develop their skills to compete at the highest level,” Mr Sulley said.

Mr Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, endorsed the initiative, noting that the Central Region’s strong academic and sporting culture provides a solid foundation for talent growth.

“Central Region is noted for sports and academics. The abundance of schools and the competitive spirit of student-athletes will make the region an attraction and soon create wealth out of the passions and emotions of our sport,” he stated.

Ms Joyce Datsa commended the Ghana Armwrestling Federation’s nationwide efforts and pledged her support toward developing the sport in the region. She emphasised the importance of commitment, teamwork, and collaboration among the association, the sports authority, and other stakeholders to achieve their objectives.

The mandate of the new leadership includes promoting armwrestling in Senior and Junior High Schools, forming regional clubs, and building a strong regional team to feed into the national squad. The initiative is expected not only to promote the sport but also to create opportunities for young athletes to represent Ghana internationally.

The Central Regional Armwrestling leadership will be formally inaugurated in the coming days, as preparations advance for a “training of trainers” programme to equip coaches and teachers with the skills to nurture emerging talents.
