French teachers urged to adopt creative methods to boost learners’ interest

French teachers have been encouraged to explore innovative and engaging methods to make the teaching and learning of the language more enjoyable and effective.

Madam Mildred Frimpong, Chief Executive Officer of GH Online French Lessons for Kids/Adults and Corporate, made the call, explaining that traditional teaching approaches have made French learning dull in many classrooms, leading to reduced enthusiasm among students.

Madam Frimpong, who also teaches at the British International School, said that incorporating technology, dramatisation, practical activities, and teaching aids such as French boards displaying colours, verbs, and body parts, could significantly increase learners’ interest.

She urged parents and education stakeholders to shift their mindset about learning French, emphasising that the benefits of mastering the language often manifest later in life.
“The orientation starts with the parents; they should encourage their children to take French as seriously as they do with mathematics and science,” she said.

Highlighting the global relevance of the language, she noted that French is spoken by over 300 million people worldwide, with more than half residing in Africa. As one of the leading international languages in diplomacy, business, and education, she said, French offers learners a gateway to global opportunities.

Madam Frimpong added that Ghana’s geographical position, surrounded by French-speaking countries like Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Benin, makes French proficiency a strategic advantage.
She said mastering the language would enable Ghanaian youth to build stronger regional partnerships and actively participate in economic and diplomatic engagements within West Africa.
