Dome-Kwabenya MP Faustina Elikplim Akurugu pledges renovation of Adenkrebi CHPS compound, donates medical supplies to strengthen primary healthcare

Accra, Oct. 8. Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, has announced plans to renovate the Adenkrebi Community-Based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) Compound in the Ga East Municipality to enhance healthcare delivery.

The MP said the renovation is necessary as the facility is structurally compromised, posing safety risks to both patients and staff. She revealed that a contractor would soon visit the site to assess the building and provide cost estimates.

Madam Akurugu made the announcement while donating essential medical supplies and equipment to outreach facilities across the constituency. The items, which included plastic chairs, standing and hanging weighing scales, blood pressure monitors, and glucometers, were presented to the Ga East Municipal Health Directorate at a brief ceremony attended by health officials and community leaders.

“Health was not left out when I began familiarising myself with the various sectors in the constituency. We observed that many health facilities were lacking basic equipment needed to deliver quality services. At the Adenkrebi CHPS compound, for instance, the building is structurally compromised and unsafe for both patients and staff,” she said.

The MP described the donation as the beginning of sustained efforts to revamp the health sector in Dome-Kwabenya, adding that plans are underway to procure motorbikes for nurses serving hard-to-reach areas to improve mobility and outreach services.

Dr. Maame Yaa Nhyira Essel, Municipal Health Director, commended the MP for her “rare and focused” investment in public health. She emphasised that the equipment would be distributed across all CHPS zones in the municipality to support child welfare clinics, maternal services, and community wellness checks.

“With the blood pressure monitors and glucometers, our community health nurses can now screen adults and elderly persons for hypertension and diabetes during home visits and at outreach points. This will allow us to detect non-communicable diseases early and offer timely interventions,” Dr. Essel said, noting that these diseases remain among the top outpatient cases in the municipality.

She urged private sector actors and other stakeholders to emulate the MP’s gesture, stressing that enhanced community health services are essential for building a productive and healthy society.

“Every contribution makes a difference. We need more hospital beds, vehicles, and essential supplies to improve public health delivery,” Dr. Essel added.
