Local Government Service vital to deepening governance and citizen participation — Volta Regional Minister

Ho, Oct 3, GNA, Mr. James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, has emphasised that the Local Government Service (LGS) remains a crucial pillar in Ghana‘s efforts to bring governance closer to the people.

He noted that the Service was essential in deepening citizen participation and ensuring equitable distribution of resources and opportunities across the country.

Mr. Gunu made these remarks in a speech read on his behalf by Mr. Augustus Awity, Chief Director of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, during the 6th Annual Conference of the Ghana Association of Local Government Service Administrative Officers (GALGA) in Ho, Volta Region.

He said the government was committed to supporting administrators through policy direction, capacity building, and the provision of adequate resources to enhance their effectiveness.

According to the Minister, administrators served as leaders of change, catalysts of innovation, and stewards of public trust, adding that they represented the professional core of the Service, the custodians of policy, and the architects of effective and responsive local governance.

“The regions across the country continue to rely on the diligence, integrity, and professionalism of the Local Government Service,” he stated.

He further highlighted the administrators’ expertise in enhancing efficiency in public administration, improving resource management, and delivering quality services that respond to the needs and aspirations of citizens.

Mr. Edmund Osei-Gyamfi, National President of GALGA, described local governance as “the cement of Ghana’s decentralisation experiment,” stressing that its success depended not only on political leadership but also on administrative excellence.

Speaking on the theme “Enhancing Local Governance Through Administrative Excellence,” Mr. Osei-Gyamfi said administrative excellence went beyond paperwork, explaining that it involved making systems function effectively, ensuring timely decision-making, and maintaining public trust through professionalism and transparency.
