Accra, Oct 3, GNA, Firefighters have successfully contained a massive blaze that swept through the Budget Deco warehouse on Thursday afternoon, near the Dignity DTRT clothing and textile facility located between CMB and the Graphic Press at Adabraka in Accra.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer II (ACFO) Rashid Nisawu, Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received a distress call at 1513 hours, arriving at the scene just four minutes later at 1517 hours to find the fire already in a mature state.
“A total of five fire engines, including a 10-table ladder unit, were quickly marshalled to combat the flames,” ACFO Nisawu said.
“The good news is that we have managed to confine the fire. We are assuring the public that the fire’s spread has been contained, it cannot go to the left, it cannot go to the right, it cannot go anywhere.”
He added that it took firefighters almost an hour to fully confine the blaze.
Despite this success, the operation faced major logistical challenges, particularly accessibility and low water pressure.
“The challenge has been accessibility. As usual, water supply was also a problem. Although a hydrant was present in the yard, its pressure was very low,” ACFO Nisawu explained.
To overcome the shortage, the GNFS relied on external water sources, including hydrants within the premises of the Graphic Group Limited and other nearby companies.
A GNA observation at the scene confirmed that factories within the Free Zones Yard on Graphic Road were protected from the fire. Fire personnel had successfully evacuated most staff from nearby companies, while a few workers assisted in moving goods to safety.
Eyewitnesses reported that the affected Budget Deco warehouse stored highly combustible materials, including carpets and chairs, which fuelled the intensity of the flames.
