Anloga DCE calls for ready market to support distressed onion farmers

Madam Sandra Seyram Kpedor, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Anloga in the Volta Region, has appealed for urgent market support for onion farmers in the area who are facing severe post-harvest losses. Farmers cultivating the Bawku Red onion variety say large portions of their produce are rotting due to lack of buyers.

During a visit to affected farms, Madam Kpedor directed the District Agriculture Department to connect farmers with potential buyers to help them recover their investments. She said schools and caterers under the School Feeding Programme were being encouraged to patronise locally grown onions as part of efforts to create demand.

“The efforts are geared towards creating a market for onion farmers in the Anloga District. We are engaging stakeholders, including schools and caterers, to stimulate demand for the Bawku Red onions and provide relief to the farmers,” she stated.

The DCE also called on the general public and organisations to support the farmers by purchasing the onions, adding that interested buyers could contact 0246684179 for details. She further tasked the Agriculture Department to provide technical assistance and facilitate sales for the farmers.

Some farmers who spoke to the Ghana News Agency expressed concern about the lack of a ready market but welcomed the DCE’s intervention. They urged wider support to strengthen local agriculture and improve livelihoods in the Anloga District.
