PNC hails Mahama’s UNGA speech, calls for unity among Nkrumahist parties

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has urged Ghanaians to take pride in President John Dramani Mahama‘s passionate address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Speaking at the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Sunyani, Bono Region, Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit, PNC National Chairman, praised President Mahama’s strong call for resource sovereignty, describing it as deserving of national pride.

He noted that the former president’s words were not only bold but a true reflection of his commitment to Africa‘s dignity and sovereignty.

“In President Mahama, we saw more than rhetoric; we saw a leader who truly believes in Ghana’s future and Africa’s rightful place on the global stage,” Mr. Awingobit said.

During his address, President Mahama urged reforms and justice for Africa, stressing the need for the continent to take full control of its natural resources, and declaring that the practice of parcelling out vast concessions to foreign interests must end.

The PNC said the call was in line with its long-standing position that successive governments must resist the continued exploitation of Africa’s wealth by foreign powers that often return little value in exchange.

The NEC meeting also focused on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures ahead of the upcoming elections. Mr. Bernard Mornah, the PNC’s 2024 presidential candidate and party leader, unveiled a roadmap for internal reorganisation. Constituency and regional primaries will be held by the end of 2026, while the National Delegates Congress is scheduled for 2027 to elect new national officers and the party’s flagbearer.

Mr. Mornah further appealed for unity within the PNC and called for all Nkrumahist-oriented parties to rally behind a single front ahead of the 2028 general elections, to create a stronger force on the national political landscape.
