GTA Central Region marks World Tourism Day with call for sustainable tourism

The Central Regional Office of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has celebrated this year’s World Tourism Day at Coco Wonderland Eco Resort near Akotsi Junction in the Gomoa East District.

World Tourism Day, observed annually on September 27, highlights the role of tourism in social, cultural, political, and economic development. The regional celebration focused on the global theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” underscoring tourism’s contribution to job creation, environmental preservation, and community growth.

The event featured symbolic tree planting by stakeholders, including Ms. Margaret Naana Ackom, Gomoa East Municipal Chief Executive; Mr. Charles Buabin, Central Regional Director of the GTA; and Mr. David Oppong Kusi, Chief Executive Officer of Coco Wonderland.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Buabin stressed the importance of preserving tourism assets for long-term economic and social benefits. He said ecotourism remained central to Ghana’s tourism strategy, describing it as a pathway to responsible development that secures opportunities for future generations.

He called for closer collaboration among government, local communities, and businesses, while inviting investors to explore the Central Region‘s untapped tourism potential, including coastal beaches, historic forts, and cultural festivals.

Ms. Ackom reaffirmed government’s readiness to support tourism projects in Gomoa East, assuring investors of a welcoming environment. Mr. Oppong Kusi also emphasized that ecotourism was about fostering harmony between communities and nature, urging Ghanaians to protect natural and cultural heritage sites from destruction.

The regional commemoration forms part of Ghana’s build-up to the global World Tourism Day celebration, scheduled for Saturday, September 27, in Accra.
