GBA assures public of boxers’ safety amid rumours of suspension

Mr Roger Banor, Acting President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), has reaffirmed the outfit’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of boxers before and after bouts.

The unfortunate passing of boxing sensation Ernest Akushey (“Bahubali”) sparked public debate on safety standards in Ghanaian boxing, with rumours circulating that the National Sports Authority (NSA) had suspended all boxing activities.

Speaking to GNA Sports, Mr Banor clarified that no such suspension had been communicated.
“There has not been any official communication to that effect, and I will implore the general public to disregard any such information. We were in a meeting with the NSA yesterday, and nothing of such sort came up for discussion. We shall continue to observe all necessary protocols to ensure the safety of all boxers,” he stated.

On measures in place, he explained that medical protocols remain central to the sport’s regulations.
“There are medical protocols before and after each bout, and we shall continue to ensure that all boxers are fit to fight, as has been the practice. Any boxer declared medically unfit shall be disqualified and taken through the necessary health checks before returning to the ring,” he said.

Mr Banor also revealed that the Authority, in consultation with the NSA, is working on a roadmap towards the upcoming GBA Congress, which forms part of efforts to reset and strengthen the local boxing authority.
