IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno promotes 12 police officers after major breakthrough in rural bank robbery bust

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno has announced the promotion of 12 police personnel in recognition of their roles in the arrest of 10 suspects linked to a series of rural bank robberies across the country.

At a press briefing in Accra, the IGP said the Police Management Board had approved promotions for three Chief Inspectors to the Police Academy, three Inspectors to Chief Inspector, two Sergeants to Inspector, one Corporal to Sergeant, and three Constables to Lance Corporal. He noted that decisions on senior officers’ promotions would be taken by the Police Council.

Mr Yohuno revealed that the operation had led to the recovery of 14 weapons, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action and single-barrel guns, pistols, ammunition, vehicles, and mobile phones. He confirmed that three suspects were shot dead in a shootout with police, while a manhunt has been launched for others still on the run.

“We will not stop until we get them arrested. Let us all be vigilant members of the community and report any suspicious persons or activities to the Police. The Service is committed to rewarding credible information shared to support our investigations,” he stressed.

The IGP described the operation as a “major breakthrough in the fight against violent crimes, especially armed robbery.” He credited the success to painstaking investigations, intelligence gathering, data analysis, and surveillance across multiple regions, including Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti.

He commended the Ashanti Regional Police Commander and his Intelligence Team for their pivotal role in uncovering the 15-member syndicate behind the robberies.

The arrested suspects include Akwesi Agyei alias Cobra, Ibrahim Alhassan, Samuel Appiah alias Akwasi Mugu, Francis Acquah alias Preman, David Obuobi alias Wasty, Martin Akansina alias One Billion, Nana Yaw Frimpong alias Mystical, Kojo Atingwo alias Borga, Samuel Akwasi Gyan, and Stephen Sey.

The 10 suspects are expected to be arraigned in court as police intensify efforts to track down their accomplices, who remain at large.
