Ghana’s rubber industry losing $100 million annually due to lack of value addition

Accra, September 2025 – The Rubber Processors Association (RPA) of Ghana has warned that the country’s rubber sector loses $100 million annually due to unregulated export channels and the absence of local value addition.

Chairman Emmanuel Akwasi Owusu made the disclosure on Accra-based Channel One TV on Friday, stressing that foreign companies exploit Ghana’s low raw rubber prices while Ghana loses out on jobs and revenue.

Currently, raw rubber sells for $600 compared to processed prices of $800–$900 abroad. This means we are effectively giving jobs and revenue to other countries while collapsing our own economy,” Mr. Owusu explained.

He urged the government to enforce existing regulations, support local processing, and encourage value addition to boost employment and retain more revenue within Ghana.
