Health Minister donates $1.5m worth of medical equipment to Ga North Municipal Hospital

The Minister of Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Wednesday, presented medical equipment valued at $1.5 million to the Ga North Municipal Hospital to strengthen healthcare delivery in the municipality.

The items included anaesthesia machines, incubators, nebulisers, ECG machines, steam sterilisers, stethoscopes, hospital beds, delivery sets and ward screens, among others.

The donation followed the Minister’s earlier visit to the facility, where he observed severe resource constraints that had compelled hospital management to operate with minimal equipment, often relying on their own means.

Mr Akandoh described the gesture as a capital investment and urged hospital authorities to maintain the equipment properly to ensure maximum benefit for patients. He added that the government would continue exploring funding options, including direct state procurement and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), to improve healthcare infrastructure nationwide.

He also acknowledged challenges such as inadequate staffing in the sector, appealing to existing health professionals to remain committed to quality service delivery.

“We know we don’t have the optimal capacity when it comes to the workforce. We’ll be seeking to add more, but we also appeal to those in the system to do their best to sustain healthcare delivery in the country,” he said.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a health system that guarantees accessible, quality, and affordable healthcare for all Ghanaians.

Receiving the items, Dr Victor Caesar, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, assured that the equipment would be put to good use and properly maintained. He noted that the hospital had experience managing borrowed equipment in the past and pledged full responsibility for the new assets, including replacement when necessary.
